British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
