Shifting from Acclaim to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Release is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the limited release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the censorship procedure.

Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.

“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.

A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release

However, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.

But a few do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to go on the attack.

“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement

Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these files for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.

Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued

However, broader discourse on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the files' release.

Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that included little previously unseen data.
