The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
